SCIENCE

“Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated.”

Rosalind Franklin

Science is about discovery, discovery of how the world works, our place, role and our responsibilities within it. We want our students to realise that science is everywhere and that it influences their lives continuously. Our students need to be able to engage with science in the future as citizens, whether that is when making decisions about healthcare options for their family, or choosing which car to buy. They have to ask the right questions, to balance pros and cons and to interpret data to do this.

Our curriculum, although bursting with knowledge, asks our students to think deeply, to ask questions, to consider alternatives, to be creative and most importantly to think like a scientist. By interweaving disciplinary knowledge with substantive knowledge we create independent thinkers.

Science is ever changing, new discoveries are made every day as new questions are asked. This creates the opportunity for exciting and relevant links to student’s current lives and what the future may hold for them as we deliver the curriculum.

In Science we encourage our students to BELIEVE that science is important to them and in their own ability to understand and engage with scientific ideas. We support students to ACHIEVE their potential in science by focussing not just on knowledge, but the working scientifically skills, that underpin science thinking. By giving students a strong understanding of science students can SUCCEED as well as being informed individuals in their future studies or careers, science related or not.
