MUSIC
“The world’s most famous and popular language is music.”

Musical sound is the key to a good music education. Learning and development come through engaging with musical sound to become better listeners, better performers, and better creators of music. Creativity is at the heart of music, the key to a musicians’ development is through developing skills and applying them to performance and composition which builds practical understanding and deeper awareness of theory and knowledge. To meet the needs and aspirations of our students the curriculum must prepare students for potential opportunities and careers but also engage students to help them believe in their abilities, build confidence and creative opportunities.
The music curriculum is designed around quality musical teaching and musical training. At KS3 the curriculum is designed to offer a range of musical experiences centred on practical music making whilst challenging students to build the knowledge and theory required to progress onto formal music qualification. At KS4 the curriculum takes students through a BTEC course designed to build skills, knowledge and experience and help them progress to further study or careers and further musical activities.
Careers in the music industry come through skill and experience. There is nowhere to hide in music, you must be able to demonstrate skills. Performers need to develop expertise and mastery of their instrument. Opportunities come through audition, ability, and a determination to succeed. Composition opportunities are gained through portfolios of work, recommendation, and demonstration of creative potential. Talk is not enough; a musician must be able to do it.
In the Music Department we strive to inspire our students to BELIEVE in their musical abilities, to enable them to ACHIEVE their musical potential and develop a skill set which will help them SUCCEED in potential musical careers or to continue engaging with music to build confidence, determination, self-discipline, and team-working skills.
