MATHS

“The study of Mathematics, like the Nile, begins in minuteness and ends in magnificence”

Charles Caleb Colton

At Monkwearmouth, we want students to understand the beauty of mathematics so that they can see that mathematics is an interconnected discipline that continually builds on prior knowledge. By studying mathematics students gain access to society, both in terms of everyday life and employment but also an insight into different communities, such as the Scientific, Engineering, Technological and Geographical.

The mathematics curriculum will allow students to do this by demonstrating fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills across Number, Algebra, Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change, Geometry and Measures, Statistics and Probability domains. The order of the curriculum has been carefully sequenced to allow students to apply key knowledge within an individual domain but also interleaved across multiple domains, this will strengthen students understanding of key concepts across domains and allow students to solve complex problems.

The curriculum will also allow students to not only explore links within mathematics, but also other subjects across the school and the real-life aspects of mathematics within their community. Students in mathematics will develop life skills and resilience which will teach them how to tackle problems and the value of never giving up on a problem and persevering. This will provide them with success in Mathematics, other subjects, and everyday life.

In mathematics we believe in all students. We believe that by demonstrating high standards, giving students support when needed, and by challenging students to be their best mathematically, that each student can achieve within mathematics and learn valuable life lessons.  This will allow them to succeed in the further study of mathematics and mathematical based subjects, as well as being numerically successful in society so that they can meet their own personal goals and ambitions in life.
