GEOGRAPHY
“The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.”
Barack Obama
As a department we want to inspire in students a curiosity and fascination about the world in which we live. We aim to equip students with knowledge and understanding about a range of places, people and their ways of life, resources, and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
Students will develop a range of geographical skills through the curriculum that will allow them to read and interpret a range of maps and graphs showing geographical data. Students will experience fieldwork that brings their knowledge and understanding into real world investigations, as well as encouraging them to explore their local area and school site to develop their understanding of the fieldwork process and its significant contribution to geographical studies. All of this will be achieved through strong support in developing their thinking and reasoning, making connections between the different aspects of their geographical learning, and questioning their understanding of the world to think like a geographer.
In the Geography Department we strive to inspire our students to BELIEVE in the positive impact their choices can make on people and the planet, to enable them to ACHIEVE their full potential and be active and considerate global citizens, and SUCCEED in a range of geographical skills that will help them to develop their employability skills and demonstrate that they have high standards of literacy.
