DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
“Scientists investigate that which already is, engineers create that which has never been”
Albert Einstein
Design Technology enables our students to actively contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves and within our community.
Design Technology prepares students for work and life in the 21st Century. It allows students to have the confidence and ability to live independently, as well as being able to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. The Design Technology curriculum equips students to obtain a range of skills, up to date knowledge and the ability to think creatively, providing them with the opportunity to make them adaptable in a fast-changing economy. At Monkwearmouth, this is further supported through the opportunity to study Design Technology, Hospitality and Catering and Construction at Key Stage 4.
Our curriculum empowers students to work independently, research, plan, implement and reflect so that they are equipped with the practical skills and technical knowledge to participate in society today. It also gives them the opportunity to pursue a career in STEM, Design or Hospitality and Catering. Design Technology teaches students to be innovative and take risks so that they can be enterprising and capable citizens. It also provides Monkwearmouth students with the knowledge and skills to design products that solve real world and relevant problems: so that they can work towards developing solutions that lead to global equality. Perhaps, most importantly, it encourages our students to make a difference!
In the Design Technology Department, we strive to inspire our students to BELIEVE in their ability to engage with all independent planning, research, development, as well as in their practical skills and technical knowledge. To enable them to ACHIEVE their potential in Design Technology we will support them to develop the practical skills and technical knowledge which will help them SUCCEED in their future career or further education choices which could include STEM, Design or Hospitality and Catering. We contextualise the knowledge and these skills through a range of projects focussing on domestic, local and industrial settings to demonstrate the broad range of new and emerging technologies as well as traditional design and technology areas.
